Principles of Success

People always care for success in every walk of life. Success brings in fame and respect. In education, job or livelihood, people want to be at the top and if they cannot attain top position, they will be disappointed. The lives of successful people are worthy to emulate. In order to achieve success, one has to follow the principles of growth at first.

According to Buddhism, the principles of growth can be explained as follows:

1. Patirupadesavasa: choosing a suitable environment; selecting appropriate place to study, work or live, is important for success and prosperity
2. Sappurisupasssaya: associating with good people; the company of wise and virtuous people is beneficial for growth in the right manner.
3. Attasammapanidhi: establishing oneself rightly; it is essential to have a clear and good goal in life and work, and try to achieve it through virtuous path.
4. Pubbekatapunnata: having a good capital foundation; one should have intelligence, aptitude, and a healthy body, and always try to improve oneself to progress to greater levels.

Having the principles of growth imbibed, one should practice the real principles of success.

The principles of success are called Iddhipada. They are:

1. Chanda: having a heart of zeal; do all work just for the love of it without expecting any rewards.
2. Viraya: doing with effort; do the work that is assigned with diligence and do not leave it middle way. Do the work with effort and finish it properly.
3. Citta: committing oneself to the task; do the work with concentration without a wavering mind and show devotion to work.
4. Vimamsa: using wise investigation; use wisdom while doing work, understand the merits and drawbacks of it and devise methods to eliminate drawbacks in order to get good results.
